Summer Curl Care

What are major hair concerns we should look for this summer?
The number one concern for those with natural hair and protective styles during the summer is lack of hydration, moisture, and exposure to the sun. Transitioning from spring to the warmer summer months can be difficult with natural and protective styles because it has a major impact on the moisture your hair receives. This impact is why it is so important to have a wash day routine, and give your hair extra care and attention during the summer when sun exposure and the warmer weather tend to leave hair much drier than usual.
How do curls type react to humidity, sweat, and sun exposure? What are great tips to combat this?
Humidity, sweat, and sun exposure are all factors that contribute to drying out natural hair. Humidity causes hydrogen bonds to block water molecules from forming in your hair, making it extra dry and frizzy. Similarly, UV radiation from the sun damages molecular bonds in the hair, ultimately fracturing its cuticles and leaving it dry and brittle. One way to maintain healthy hair is to keep it hydrated with water throughout the week, and seal it with a moisturizing styling product, or light oil.
Tips do you have to make your protective style last longer in the summer months?
One tip for making sure that your protective style lasts in the summer months is to protect your hair at night with a satin bonnet, pillowcase, or scarf. This is something that is important all year with protective styles, but even more so in the summer when you really want to retain your hairs moisture. Another tip to help protective styles last is to incorporate using a refresher into your daily routine. You can create a combo of your choice to put into a spray bottle and use to refresh and moisturize your hair daily to help your style last. Aloe Vera is a great ingredient to incorporate into your spray, as it also provides some added SPF protection.
What are some fun and easy protective styles to try this summer?
There are so many protective styles that are great for the summertime. If you’re looking for an updo, I love flat twists. It’s easy to do yourself and will last for a couple of days - plus it keeps your hair off your shoulders in the warmer summer months. Another fun style to try is two chunky twist braids. This look is great for protecting hair from heat and sun, especially if you have medium-long hair. Or, if you want to change it up a bit, I love to do a single side twist braid. This look is perfect for mornings when you don’t have the time for a full twist-out.
All in all, a healthy hair care routine is a must whether you are rocking your curls, or giving them a break : ).
