How to properly detangle your curls? A Naturally Drenched guide

Detangling Curls 101

As you may have figured out, detangling curly hair can quickly become a disaster if done incorrectly. Whether you accidentally fell asleep after your wash day routine, forget to wear your bonnet, or even worse, you use the wrong detangling shampoo or conditioner. Detangling can be a mess to figure out.

Luckily, with the right technique and products, detangling your curls won't turn into an arm workout and will leave your curls looking healthy and give you a frizz-free definition. Here's what to do:

Part your hair in small sections

Combing your hair haphazardly is the quickest way to damage your hair and will only make the process longer. Instead, part your hair in small, easy-to-manage sections before you begin detangling.

We recommend using clips to keep your hair properly sectioned.

Maintain high levels of moisture

Moisture is a vital part of curly hair care. It's just as important when you're detangling. Avoid shampoos and conditioners that strip moisture from your hair or leave your hair feeling dry. Keep a squirt bottle and your favorite leave-in conditioner nearby to keep your hair moisturized as you detangle.

We recommend Rebalance, you'll get the moisture and nutrients your hair needs to smooth your cuticles and help you detangle your curls.

Use proper tools for detangling

Detangling your hair is a process that requires the right tools and patience. We recommend a detangling brush, or a wide-toothed comb NOT a paddle brush.

Detangling brushes often have more spaced-out bristles than other brushes, allowing for separation. These brushes fan out as you go through your hair, eliminating snags and tears that regular paddle brushes can cause.

Start at the bottom

Never, ever begin detangling your hair by going from root to ends.

This causes pulling that can damage both your scalp and your hair. The easiest way to make sure you're protecting your scalp while you detangle is to hold the hair close to the scalp with one hand while brushing the ends with the other hand, slowly making your way to the root.

Be patient

We already mentioned this, but it's crucial to be patient when detangling your hair.

Rushing through this process can cause damage to your hair and scalp and won't correctly detangle your curls. You won't have to do this process often (usually only on wash days) so take your time to do it right.

Add Naturally Drenched to your wash day to aid with detangling and add the moisture and nutrients your curls need!
